On the road again!
So remember how last post I wrote I mentioned getting ready for a road trip across North America? Well, as of the time I’m writing this (keep in mind our posts are slightly delayed), we are on day three of our excellent adventure! Update: We are negative for COVID (and have been for a while) and are having a wonderful time!
To start this epic journey, we loaded up Ruby the Red, our 1987 Chevy getaway van, and we hit the road, travelling from beautiful British Columbia to sunny all the way east to South Carolina and back (hopefully all in one piece 😂). When we originally bought Ruby the Red back in 2019, we had always intended to do this kind of trip in mind! For some backstory, we originally named the van Alice the Palace, but while it’s an epic name, the beautiful colouring really makes the name ‘Ruby’ stick. Kevin and I were excited to do a road trip, because although it’s much faster to fly somewhere and have a holiday, a road trip slows things down! Not only do you see the change in countryside, but you get a chance to meet locals and learn a little bit about the history and their stories ftom different regions, as well meeting other travellers who are having their own adventure!!
So, why are we going to South Carolina? Great question!! There is a reason for our destination which we’ll talk about in a different blog post (so stay tuned for updates!), but as of today we have already driven through Washington, Oregon, California and are currently making our way south through Nevada! We expect things to slow down a bit now so we can see more of the beautiful natural sites of interest like the Grand Canyon and Lower Antelope Canyon, both of which offer different but breathtaking vistas (I’m told!!)
So far we have been staying at Harvest Hosts locations. In case you aren’t familiar, ‘Harvest Hosts’ offer a place to stay to park and rest overnight for free, providing you are in some kind of RV or camper, and can dry camp. It is a fantastic service, and in return they ask campers to support their local products. I’m no expert in it, and if you’re curious to learn more for your future adventures, check out the official website for more information: https://harvesthosts.com/
So far we have stayed at two places, Honeymoon Farm in Aurora, Oregon, and in the parking lot at IMBIB, a fantastic micro brewery in Reno, both of which had friendly and welcoming hosts, as well as great local goodies!
Tonight we stay on historic Route 66 at Mike’s saloon and bar! We’ll get dinner and sample the local aperitifs, and then head back out to Ruby the Red for a good night’s sleep!! For us, this is a great way to travel!
