A Pet Fashion Show for Christmas!
So, are you the owners of furry friends? So many of us are - and I was told that the best pet owners are retired people. I’m not completely sure about that as we have always had pets, and they have always had a great home, but there is definitely some truth to the saying that the best pet owners are retired people. I think that is for a couple of reasons.
We are home, most of the time. For years we had pets who were content with waiting at home all day for someone (anyone) to come home. The dogs always got lots of exercise (critical to having a happy and well adjusted dog) the time for which was carved out of my very early mornings - good for both of us).
We are lonely - well, not really. But when you have kids AND pets - it’s crazy. The kids come first, except if you get the dog(s) out the door between 5:30 and 6:00 in the morning to be sure you have time for the 2 legged loved ones. When the kids are gone and you are retired, there is just more time to enjoy rather than just have another chore.
If we cannot be home because we are on a holiday with out them, or even just away for the weekend, we make sure our pets are not alone. We arrange for others to visit or even take our furry friends for a while, or even move into our homes so our pets won't feel lonely or abandoned.
Kevin never really had a dog as a kid, at least not one that was around for a decade or so, so he was very nervous about getting a dog. I had a dog throughout my formative years and after she died, I dreamed about her until I finally got my very own first dog when I was well into my 20’s. We always had cats, and I knew that my home would likely always have a pet or 2 around. If you want the full story on that, please consider having a read of my book “Six MInute Sex - Maintain Passion and Nurturung Intimacy in Long Term Relationships” where I tell the story of our dogs. It is really worth a read!
But now we are so very settled with Lovely, our wonderful Golden Doodle! We are currently her guardians and will be breeding her in the Spring, so if you are interested in owning a doodle of EXCELLENT lineage, please ask me some questions! Anyway, back to the Christmas Parade.
Now I was never a person who thought that dressing up my pet was a “thing”. However, as our last dog was a service dog who worked with youth in trauma, I started putting hats on her when seasonal celebrations came along, which gradually led to capes and other costumes of sorts. She was such a good sport!
And to my surprise, it seemed like all of a sudden, having a wardrobe for your pet was the new thing! Especially for smaller dogs, and even cats.
So to keep up with everyone else, this season Kevin and I decided that we would each choose 2-3 outfits for each pet - our cat Lexi and our dog Lovely, and we would spend one of our date evenings putting on a Christmas Fashion Show Pet Parade! Of course the store of our choosing was Amazon, the winners (meaning the pets) would get lots of treats for co operating, and we would get some seasonal outfits for our furry friends, as well as some laughs.
It was WAY more fun than I thought it would be! The cat Lexi seemed to be a natural, accepting costumes and costume changes like she had been doing it all her life. The dog Lovely is a pleaser, so she is willing to do just about anything if it makes us happy.
We had lots of laughs and fun, and of course the real winners were Lovely and Lexi, the best pet pals around. And now we have some great outfits for years to come. So that’s another idea for a delightful Christmas date night - enjoy!!!
