A Beautiful Christmas Walk To See The Lights and Set the Stage for the Season!

Date night sometimes can look like a glorified dog-walk! If you’ve been up to date on our posts this month, you’ll know that Kevin and I went to see a local lights display at Lafarge Lake in Coquitlam, BC. It is a wonderful event that brings people from all over the Vancouver-area to come appreciate the holiday festivities in a display of lights. However, on a recent walk with Kevin, myself, and the dog, we couldn’t help but notice beautiful lights EVERYWHERE. The fronts of stores, the trees framing the main streets, the neighbourhood; everywhere we looked there were lights!

So instead of making a big deal out of date night as an event, we just did a tour of our neighbourhood on an evening that it wasn’t raining with the two of us and the dog in tow (or towing, depends on her energy levels!).  And we learned that we really were witnessing something pretty wonderful and special.  It was beautiful.  Hundreds of little white lights twinkling gentle in the cold, other front yards with manger scenes honouring the Spirit of Christmas, other busy colourful that must have taken hours to assemble, and still others with sleds and reindeer and grinches, Santas and many after Christmas characters greeting us as we walked along. We were amazed at the effort others go to in order to brighten up the nights, and in fact felt a little embarrassed at our own efforts.

Christmas lights just brighten up the world. They feel especially warm and inviting on those cold (and often wet) evenings.  I remember driving home from work looking at all the cheery lights on my way, and thinking that Kevin and I really should just take a walk through our own neighbourhood and enjoy the displays.  The truth was, we rarely made time to do that together, but this year, it’s on our list! So how wonderful is it to do a mundane task, such as walking the dog, and make it special? To wear our Santa-hats, put on our mittens, if we had some extra foresight we could have sippied hot chocolate, and walk hand-in-hand with your favourite person?
